Play Absurdle online for free and try to solve a five-letter word puzzle that actively resists your guesses. Unlike Wordle, Absurdle does not commit to one secret answer at the beginning of the game.
After every guess, the game keeps the largest possible group of valid answers while respecting all previous clues. Your challenge is to reduce that group until the algorithm has nowhere left to hide.

Absurdle is an adversarial word puzzle created by developer and writer qntm, also known as Sam Hughes. The game was released online in January 2022 as a more demanding variation of Wordle.
Wordle selects one fixed answer before you enter your first guess. Absurdle begins with a large list of possible answers and delays choosing a final word for as long as possible. Every response remains consistent with the clues already displayed, but the game selects the feedback pattern that leaves the greatest number of possible words.
This means the answer does not change randomly. Absurdle follows a clear algorithm designed to reveal as little useful information as possible while never contradicting its earlier green, yellow or gray tiles.

| Word Length | Five letters |

Absurdle starts with every word in its possible-answer list. When you submit a guess, the game compares that word with all remaining candidates and separates them into groups based on the color feedback they would produce.
It then selects the largest remaining group. This usually gives you the least helpful response while keeping as many answers available as possible. The process repeats after each guess:
Eventually, your guesses force the candidate list to become smaller. Once the game can no longer avoid committing to one answer, you can identify and submit the final word.
The feedback uses the familiar Wordle color system, but its purpose is different. In Wordle, the colors describe one answer selected before the game. In Absurdle, they describe the largest answer group the algorithm can keep after your latest guess.
The version displayed on this page includes the following verified options:
Standard mode uses the regular adversarial rules and gives you unlimited guesses. The algorithm attempts to keep the largest possible answer group after every submitted word.
Hard mode requires every later guess to use all the information already revealed. Confirmed green letters must remain correctly positioned, while revealed yellow letters must continue to be considered.
Challenge mode gives you a specific target word. Instead of accepting any final answer, you must choose guesses that force the algorithm toward the assigned target. This mode is intended for experienced players who understand how the candidate groups work.
Timed mode gives you 60 seconds to enter each guess. It is marked as an experimental option in the game and adds time pressure to the standard deduction process.
This experimental setting uses a word list approximately five times larger than the standard list. It can include uncommon words, making the final answer more difficult to predict.
| Feature | Absurdle | Wordle |

| Main Objective | Force the algorithm to commit to an answer | Identify the predetermined answer |
| Color Feedback | Based on the largest remaining answer group | Based on one fixed word |

Absurdle can be played directly in a modern browser on desktop computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones. The version embedded on this page follows qntm’s adversarial rules and includes the Random Guess, Give Up and difficulty-setting controls.
No APK, Steam installation or browser extension is required. This page embeds a browser version from a third-party game host and is not the official website operated by qntm.

Wordle selects one answer before the game starts. Absurdle keeps a pool of possible answers and chooses the feedback that leaves the largest compatible group after each guess.
No. Its algorithm follows a consistent process and never contradicts the green, yellow or gray clues already shown.
Standard mode gives you unlimited guesses. The original game’s help section states that the best possible result is four guesses.
The displayed version includes Standard, Hard, Challenge and experimental Timed modes. It also offers an experimental expanded word list.
No. You can play the browser version on a supported desktop or mobile device without downloading an APK, Steam game or browser extension.
Absurdle changes the familiar five-letter guessing format by making the answer-selection process adversarial. Use each clue to reduce the remaining possibilities, test letters that separate similar candidates and continue until the algorithm is forced to commit to a word.
